Meet That Leader

November 2017

Thanks to the Alumni Association’s Leaders of Industry Series, one alumna is now exploring the thought of pursuing entrepreneurial work with small business owners. In this testimonial, Joi Rushing, ’07, tells how she found inspiration at a presentation by Shinola’s CMO.

Joi Rush, '07There were 60 or so of us gathered at the Shinola store on Main Street in Ann Arbor for an intimate “fireside chat” with Bridget Russo. She was, at that time, the company’s chief marketing officer. We were gathered as part of the Alumni Association’s Leaders of Industry Series. We took turns asking questions about framing a message, the psychology of marketing, and the personal and professional experiences that paved Russo’s career.

I was intrigued by her insight and experiences. Rarely does one get the opportunity to speak so candidly with such an established leader. Being surrounded by fellow Michigan alumni added a particular energy to the room, and I left feeling incredibly inspired.

I have recently been exploring the thought of pursuing entrepreneurial work with small business owners in addition to my corporate job. I studied economics at Michigan, so everything I know about marketing has been self-taught. The chance to engage with the chief marketing officer of Shinola was incredibly timely and provided tremendous insight for me as I continue to gauge my interest in pursuing this new field.

It’s uplifting to know that opportunities are available to connect and reenergize with those who have a shared pride in knowing how hard we have worked to be where we are. These experiences are unlike anything else. They are truly priceless.
