Grab a Drink at the Go Blue Homecoming Tailgate

One of the new attractions at this year’s Go Blue Homecoming Tailgate is a beer and wine garden, sponsored by the Northern United Brewing Company. This Michigan-based brewery was started by lifelong friends and alumni Jon Carlson, ’93, and Greg Lobdell, ’94, MARCH’98.

“I think we’re both really proud to have gone to U-M,” Greg said. “I think wherever we go in the world, we feel proud to talk about the University and our experiences there.” The two made it clear they don’t take their time at U-M lightly. Graduating with Michigan degrees “was a great accomplishment,” as Greg put it, and Jon describes going to U-M as “like a dream,” coming from a small town.

“I don’t think we could be more proud to partner with the Alumni Association,” Jon said of sponsoring the beer and wine garden at the 38th Annual Go Blue Homecoming Tailgate.

While Jon started in real estate development after graduation, Greg went on to obtain several graduate degrees. They partnered up in business in 2004. Since then, their most successful venture has been the Northern United Brewing Company. With the actually brewery in Dexter, the company owns Ann Arbor favorites Jolly Pumpkin and Grizzly Peak, as well as the North Peak label.

Jolly Pumpkin is one of Northern United Brewing’s brands.

“Our motto is kind of like the University of Michigan. We’re not going to be the biggest brewery in the world, we’re not going to be the smallest—we’re going to bust our rears to be the best brewery in the world. Our goal isn’t to mass produce; we just want to make the best product we possibly can.”
